The struggle to integrate Girard College is a major milestone of the American civil rights movement. Established in 1831 for “poor white male orphans,” the mid-20th century segregated school, located in the heart of North Philadelphia’s black community, inspired resentment and anger. Instead of the “great man” view of history centered on charismatic, well-known individuals, this documentary is a “peope’s history,” a postmodernist look at action told through the recollections of those who were at the wall every day.
