Originating in the North Woods of the Western Hemisphere as a means of travel, often to move trade goods, Canoe Poling was used to carry the canoeist upstream against the current. Once the headwaters were reached, the traveler would then portage to the next drainage and move downstream, usually as a paddler. In modern times, the activity has a more recreational use, and the canoe is usually empty and propelled with an aluminum pole instead of the traditional wooden pole.
